Literacy

Kennedy School uses the Pearson myView curriculum for literacy. First graders will be exposed to fiction and non-fiction text throughout the year. We will explore various literary aspects including character and setting, character traits, and beginning, middle, and end in fiction texts as well as text-features, comparing and contrasting, vocabulary, and questioning in non-fiction texts.

Reading Room time (one hour each day) will consist of foundational skills and guided reading. Guided reading is instructional-level reading, picture walks, tricky word hunts, word-solving strategies, and reading comprehension strategies. Students are in ability-level groups and rotate through centers which include reading with the teacher, independent assignments related to their books, read to self, word sorts, and completing tasks through apps on the iPad.

Writer's Workshop

Kennedy School follows a combination of the myView Literacy and Lucy Calkin's curriculums for writing. Our writing time consists of a mini-lesson, independent writing, and teacher conferences. Students will use their personal experiences to write small moment stories. We will also learn about non-fiction writing through how-to and all-about pieces. Students will publish stories at the end of each unit.

Math

Our curriculum, Pearson Envision, covers grade-appropriate skills, math fluency practice, hands-on activities, and games. Our main focus in first grade is addition and subtraction. Throughout the year, we will be working on adding and subtracting through 100, measurement and data, shapes, time, and place value.

On Thursdays, we will visit the Media Center. Students can check out 2 books each week to take home and read. Please keep the books clean and safe and return them to school each Thursday. Students will not be allowed to check out more books if they do not return the ones they already have at home.
